Power system learning / Islanding

Power System Islanding and Island Mode Operation

Islanding occurs when part of the network becomes electrically separated from the main grid. Once islanded, local generation and load must be balanced more carefully because external support is reduced or unavailable.

Island balance

An island needs enough generation to supply local load, but not so much that over-generation creates a frequency or voltage problem.

Import/export constraints

Interconnectors and transformers can support an area, but only within ratings and protection constraints. The simulator shows import and export direction explicitly.

Defense actions

During islanding, load shedding, generator runback, or restoration steps may be needed depending on the resulting source-load balance.
